MLB Interleague Betting Odds: New York Yankees at Chicago Cubs
Friday, June 17, 2011
by Frank Martin
One historic franchise pays a visit to another on Friday when the New York Yankees open a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs. Yes, you read that right. As strange as it sounds, the Yankees will be making just their second visit to Wrigley Field since the 1932 World Series when they face the Cubs.
New York completed a three-game sweep and recorded its sixth win in seven outings with a 3-2 victory in 12 innings over the Texas Rangers on Thursday afternoon. For its part, Chicago took three of four from the National League Central rival Milwaukee Brewers that was capped by a 12-7 slugfest on Thursday.

Yankees RH Freddy Garcia (5-5, 3.60 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Doug Davis (0-5. 5.90 ERA)
Garcia has enjoyed considerable success against the Cubs, posting a 4-0 career mark with a 1.47 ERA in six starts. The veteran righthander is coming off a solid outing during his last trip to the mound. Garcia permitted just one run in 6 2/3 innings in Sunday's 9-1 rout of the Cleveland Indians. Garcia has pitched at least six innings in eight of his first 11 starts this season.
Davis' record speaks for itself, but he did have a solid outing in his last start. The 35-year-old southpaw allowed two runs in five innings but settled for a no-decision against the Philadelphia Phillies. As for the Cubs, well, they have dropped all six games that Davis has started this season. Davis has posted a 3-2 career mark with a 6.28 ERA against the Yankees.
New York finished its 10-game homestand with a 6-4 mark. Considering the Yankees dropped the first three contests to the Boston Red Sox, the mark isn't too shabby. Curtis Granderson, who went 3-for-5 on Thursday, has 13 hits in his last seven contests. After belting two homers on Wednesday to tie Granderson and Toronto's Jose Bautista for the American League lead, Mark Teixeira went 0-for-6 on Thursday.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who is an Illinois native, plans to drive 2 1/2 hours on Sunday morning to spend Father's Day with his dad. The elder Girardi has Alzheimer's disease. Larry Rothschild, who served as the Cubs' pitching coach for several years, will also return to Wrigley Field.
Kosuke Fukudome belted a three-run homer and drove in four on Thursday. Fukudome also made his presence felt in the field by throwing out Rickie Weeks on two occasions. Activated from the disabled list on Wednesday, Alfonso Soriano launched his team-leading 13th homer. Soriano has enjoyed some success against Garcia, going 7-for-23 in his career with a pair of extra-base hits.
While Soriano's faring well at the plate, he's not thrilled that former teammate Derek Jeter isn't going to be playing in this series. "I'm not happy my boy's not playing. I was hoping he could have 2,999 hits and get 3,000 here and I can see it. I wanted to see 3,000 here in Chicago. Now I just have to see it on TV."
